Some want Poly to sever ties with USF

USF Poly officials have acknowledged a local movement to shed ties with USF.

A letter has been circulated to some educators and government officials, reported Bay News 9′s newspaper partner, the Lakeland Ledger.

School spokeswoman Samantha Lane told the Ledger that leaders have seen the letter but are focusing on construction of the new campus.

Poly is the state’s only public polytechnic. The new campus will focus on high-tech fields of the future, Gov. Rick Scott said recently. That distinction could be the reason some want the school to separate from USF.

State education leaders ultimately would decide such a move. Insiders told the Ledger even if Poly did sever ties with USF, the change should not be seen as a division but rather a sign of Poly’s growth.
