Right now, Interstate 4 is free to drivers. Congress outlawed tolls on the highway four years ago.
That may change, and the man who led the charge against the tolls is the one now in favor of it.
Congressman John Mica, R-Winter Park, now thinks tolls should be allowed for new lanes being added to the interstate.
The Florida Department of Transportation wants to add more lanes on I-4 from Orlando to Longwood, at a cost of more than $2 billion. Mica said the tolls would help pay for the cost.
The congressman said the gas tax, which is normally used to pay for roads, is not bringing in enough money to pay for roads across the country.
FDOT said there is not enough money to widen I-4.
It’s not known when Mica’s plan would come up for a vote, as Congress is bogged down with the debt crisis.
Mica is chairman of the House Transportation Committee.
