A few things have been happening in the life of baseball’s Hit King, Pete Rose. Born April 14, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Peter Edward Rose celebrated his 70th birthday yesterday. On April 13, 1963, playing for the Cincinnati Reds, Rose hit a triple off Pittsburgh Pirate’s Bob Friend — the beginning of a brilliant baseball career for the player known as “Charlie Hustle.” That major league career was derailed by Rose’s game betting as both a player and manager of the Reds. He was permanently banned from baseball in 1989. Rose’s gambling addiction has cost him dearly, and he’s still paying.
In 1990, Rose was convicted of filing false income tax returns with the IRS, having failed to disclose income derived primarily from two sources. First, his baseball celebrity (namely autographs and sports memorabilia), and second, his winnings from race horse bets. He served five months in the U.S. Penitentiary in Marion, Illinois and was fined $50,000, he also paid about $366,000 in back taxes and interest to the IRS, and did some community service.
Apparently that wasn’t sufficient. Rose very recently arrived at a tax settlement of almost $973,700, those are his back taxes for tax years 1997 through 2002 (what about 2003 to 2010?). Apparently, there are some problems that gambling addiction therapy cannot help.
Before news of his tax settlement, on February 25, Rose filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court from his second wife, Carol (his first wife was Karolyn). The couple was married in April of 1984. In 1984, Rose was finishing up with the Montreal Expos and starting back with the Cincinnati Reds, where he would manage the team until 1989.
In his petition for dissolution, Rose alleges irreconcilable differences as the basis of the divorce, agrees to pay alimony to Carol, and makes claim to his separate property including “any and all memorabilia from before the date of marriage.” All reasonable enough. But there’s a little something more attached to this petition, which makes one wonder what’s next for Pete Rose. He’s requested that “with respect to any contested issue submitted to the Court for determination… the Court include… any and all calculations upon which the determination of any issue was made, including, but not limited to, issues of spousal support, property valuation, property division, tax consequences and attorney fees.”
Apparently, Rose has been involved in an extra-marital relationship for some time, perhaps since 2009, with model Kiana Kim. And if you want Pete Rose’s autograph, you shouldn’t have to look to hard. Says Rose, “I’m in the autograph business and I don’t apologize for it, nor should I.”
