Florida lawmakers put a stop to local lawmakers making laws outlawing fertilizers

More than three dozen cities and counties in the state of Florida have summertime bans on the use and sale of chemical-infused fertilizer. Lucky for them, they’ve been grandfathered in.

Under a new state law, local governments are no longer allowed to pass new fertilizer bans. Fertilizer containing nitrogen and phosphate can be more effective in treating lawns and gardens. The problem comes when the fertilizer runs off into streams, lakes and the ocean. The chemicals give life to toxic algae. Still, supporters of the fertilizer lawmaking crackdown said the laws were depriving Florida’s economy of essential nutrients. Environmentalists, on the other hand, call Tallahassee’s action an assault on the independence of city hall. “We’re telling them that they, local governments, they have to clean up their water, that they have to protect their streams and rivers and not have them all turn slimy green,” said Eric Draper of the Audubon of Florida. “We’re also saying the most important thing they can do, which is control fertilizers, they can no longer do.” Pinellas and Manatee Counties, along with the City of Tampa already have laws in place that will not be hindered by the state’s new law.
