Perry’s Texas has jobs, also good luck

Law News No Comments »

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — In Vernon, Calif., billboards and radio ads bought by the city in suburban Los Angeles portray Texas Gov. Rick Perry as some kind of unstoppable, job-lassoing marauder — an image Perry himself would no doubt embrace if he decided to run for president.

“This just in,” begin the radio spots, which started airing in June, “Texas Gov. Rick Perry is urging Vernon’s 1,800 employers to move their 55,000-plus jobs from California to Texas.” Beneath the voiceover, an emergency siren wails.

When it comes to attracting jobs, are Perry and Texas really such a force to be reckoned with?

That question is stirring discussion around the country these days, especially in political circles, as Texas markets itself as a job mecca and as Perry ponders whether to run for president in an election that will be focused on jobs and the economy. Dur Find more info…

Is There a “Best” Parenting Plan?

Politics Guide No Comments »

Very Young Children: The overwhelming developmental need of infants and toddlers (children 3 and under) is for a secure attachment to a caregiver who meets needs consistently. Children at this age require routines and consistent schedules. Because of their short memories, frequent contact with both parents is preferable. However, frequent travel between homes may not be best for the child because of the difficulty of maintaining routines. By age 4, children who have overnights with both parents show better behavioral adjustment and attachment.

Elementary-School-Aged Children: Developmentally, children in elementary school are concerned about fairness, and competition.

A New Strategy to Combat an Evolving Threat

Law Office No Comments »

Today, I am proud to stand with my colleagues from across the Administration as we unveil a comprehensive, cutting-edge strategy – the Strategy to Combat Transnational Organized Crime – that will take our nation’s fight against transnational organized crime to the next level.

Not only will this new strategy allow us to integrate our work more effectively, and to leverage limited resources more efficiently, it also will ensure that our agencies – and our government and law enforcement partners – have the tools and authorities necessary to protect the American people from some of today’s most urgent, and complex, threats.

Of course, the problem of transnational organized crime networks isn’t new.  But after a wide-ranging, year-long review – the first study of its kind in more than 15 years – our understanding of what exactly we’re up against has never been clearer or more complete.

Today’s criminal organizations are increasingly sophisticated.  They know no borders.  They threaten the stability of our financial system, and the promise of a competitive marketplace.  And their operations are putting far too many American businesses, government institutions, consumers, and citizens at risk.

For these reasons, in recent years, the Justice Department has strengthened our fight against transnational organized crime – and expanded our successful counter-narcotics work.  But this is no longer just a law enforcement issue; it is a problem that demands the attention, and assistance, of a broad spectrum of partners.

With this new strategy, leaders across government and law enforcement are signaling our commitment to combat transnational organized crime by sharing information and expertise as never before, and by developing the legislative solutions we need to address 21st-century threats.  This framework will bolster relevant authorities here in the U.S. – while, at the same time, st

Conservative ire threatens GOP debt plan in House

Law News No Comments »

WASHINGTON – House GOP leaders are postponing a vote on a plan to trade more than $1 trillion in spending cuts for an increase in the government’s borrowing cap that would be nearly as large.

Rep. David Dreier of California says the postponement is because congressional scorekeepers said the bill won’t produce the budget savings promised by House Speaker John Boehner when unveiling it Monday.

Republicans are also struggling to shore up support for the measure among conservatives unhappy over its promised budget cuts.

GOP leaders had promised a vote on Wednesday. Dreier says the measure could come to a vote on Thursday after it’s modified.
