Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick wants to go back to state prison, eyes July parole Tweet Share Share close Google Buzz Digg Stumble Upon Fark Share Email Print Kwame KilpatrickIncarcerated felon and former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is returning to Detroit this morning, where he’s expected to seek his transfer from federal to state custody and lay the groundwork for his eventual parole.

Kilpatrick’s attorney tells Fox 2 he expects a federal magistrate will grant Kilpatrick a personal bond on federal charges, allowing him to transfer back to state prison so the parole board can review his case prior to a possible release.

Kilpatrick currently is serving a 14-month to five-year state sentence for violating the terms of his probation on obstruction of justice charges related to his text-message scandal. While in prison, he was indicted by a federal grand jury on several charges, including extortion, fraud and tax evasion.

Attorney James C. Thomas previously requested Kilpatrick’s move from a state facility to the federal prison in Milan so that his client could be closer to his family and have access to a computer in order to review documents related to his case.  But getting him back in the state system would allow Kilpatrick to qualify for parole as early as July 24.

Today’s hearing, then, is a procedural one.  But it’s a reminder that Kilpatrick could be a free man again by the end of the summer. At least until his federal case concludes.
