Rebekah Brooks, the former chief executive of News International, is to be charged over allegations that she tried to conceal evidence from detectives investigating phone hacking and alleged bribes to public officials.

Brooks, one of the most high-profile figures in the newspaper industry, will be charged later on Tuesday with three counts of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice in July last year at the height of the police investigation, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced.

She is accused of conspiring with others, including her husband, Charlie Brooks, the racehorse trainer and friend of the prime minister, and her personal assistant, to conceal material from detectives.

Brooks and her husband were informed of the charging decision – the first since the start of the Operation Weeting phone-hacking investigation last January – when they answered their bail at a police station in London on Tuesday morning.

They are among six individuals from News International, along with the company’s head of security, Mark Hanna, to be charged over allegations that they removed material, documents and computers to hide them from officers investigating phone hacking. The

May 8 – Judicial footsteps

Judges, we’ve learned from the example of Pakistan, can be some of the most forceful advocates for systemic change in a country’s legal system. In 2007, Pakistan’s judges, led by Supreme Court Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, held an uprising over executive intervention in the judicial branch. Moroccan judges, it seems, are taking a page from their Pakistani brethren, and a delegation of Moroccan judges recently even met with Chief Justice Chaudhry of Pakistan, the International News reported. The upshot: On Monday, thousands of the country’s judges signed a petition suggesting ways the government can scale back its contact with the judicial branch.

RALEIGH — North Carolina has become the 31st state to add an amendment on marriage to its constitution, with voters banning same-sex marriage and barring legal recognition of unmarried couples by state and local governments.

North Carolina is the last state in the South to add such an amendment, and supporters hoped for a resounding victory.

Incomplete returns show the amendment up 61.05 percent to 38.95 percent.

Primary turnout was heavy. Though there were many other races on the ballot, including primaries for statewide offices and congressional seats, the amendment appeared to drive much of the political discussion.

Marriage rights for gay couples has been a topic of national debate this year, and North Carolinas amendment and the campaigns for and against it drew international attention.

Even as a once-mighty law firm was disintegrating around them, many associates of Dewey LeBoeuf heard nothing official about their own fate.

But that changed Tuesday as the law firm began laying off associates with one week of notice in a conference room meeting, reports the Wall Street Journal Law Blog. The article relies on information from an unidentified lawyer who attended the meeting and says other such meetings were expected later in the day.

We are pretty happy to have some closure instead of this drip torture, one associate told the blog. It says the terminated associates’ last day at the firm will be May 15.

An Above the Law post, based on anonymous tips, says those laid off were told associates will not get paid after May 15 and will get no severance.

The Lawyer reports that Dewey associates in London were told at a Tuesday lunch meeting they may not get paid after May 31.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Senate Minority Leader Sean Burrage last week decried the failure of a measure that would have extended the life of the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority. But the chairman of the committee in which House Bill 2236 failed Monday said there will be another vote next week. The measure didn’t advance out of the Senate General Government Committee. The vote was 4-4. “Basically, a bill failed that would re-create the OETA, the PBS affiliate, here in the state,” said Burrage, D-Claremore. “I think that is significant. I think it is important we have OETA for what it does for the state. It causes me great concern that it is something that we would let happen. Find more info…
