Long Beach’s top health official resigning in wake of cuts

LONG BEACH — Amid another round of deep cuts, Long Beach Health Officer Helene Calvet has resigned, taking a job with the Orange County Health Agency.

Calvet, who has been with the Health Department for 11 years, would not comment on her resignation, effective Aug. 25, but she said the cuts were one of the reasons for her decision.

Director Ron Arias said there were 20 staff positions cut from the budget, for a total of 125 job reductions since 2009.

Arias said the savings for the current round would be about $1.3 million, or about a 2 percent drop in staffing — some filled and some vacated slots.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — In Vernon, Calif., billboards and radio ads bought by the city in suburban Los Angeles portray Texas Gov. Rick Perry as some kind of unstoppable, job-lassoing marauder — an image Perry himself would no doubt embrace if he decided to run for president.

“This just in,” begin the radio spots, which started airing in June, “Texas Gov. Rick Perry is urging Vernon’s 1,800 employers to move their 55,000-plus jobs from California to Texas.” Beneath the voiceover, an emergency siren wails.

When it comes to attracting jobs, are Perry and Texas really such a force to be reckoned with?

Children at this age require routines and consistent schedules. Because of their short memories, frequent contact with both parents is preferable. However, frequent travel between homes may not be best for the child because of the difficulty of maintaining routines. By age 4, children who have overnights with both parents show better behavioral adjustment and attachment.

Elementary-School-Aged Children: Developmentally, children in elementary school are concerned about fairness, and competition.
