WASHINGTON – Republicans walked out of budget talks on Thursday, setting up a showdown between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner over how to extend U.S. borrowing and avoid a looming debt default.

Vice President Joe Biden and a handful of lawmakers had been working on a budget-cutting deal that would allow Congress to sign off on continued borrowing, but Republicans quit unexpectedly after saying the group had reached an impasse over tax increases sought by Democrats.

“It is time for the president to speak clearly and resolve the tax issue,” said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who had represented House Republicans in the talks. R

Court to Microsoft: Pay $290 million

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court says Microsoft Corp. must pay a $290 million patent infringement judgment awarded to a small Toronto software company in a patent lawsuit.

The high court on Thursday refused to throw out the judgment against the world’s largest software maker.

Toronto-based i4i sued Microsoft in 2007, saying it owned the technology behind a tool used in Microsoft Word. The technology in question gave Word 2003 and Word 2007 users an improved way to edit XML, which is computer code that tells the program how to interpret and display a document’s contents.

The lower courts say Microsoft willfully infringed on the patent, and ordered the software maker to pay i4i $290 million and stop selling versions of Word containing the infringing technology. T

Children and adults with diabetes are protected by our nation’s disability rights laws, but they often face discrimination on the basis of their disability in decisions about where they may go to school, conditions of employment, or admission or access to the goods, programs, or benefits of state or local governments or businesses offering public accommodations.  The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has worked closely with the American Diabetes Association and other advocacy groups on behalf of children and adults with diabetes to ensure they are not subjected to illegal discrimination.
